Normally held on June 21st, the contest will now be held on the Saturday closest to that date so that more skaters and fans will be able to celebrate.
“We have held the contest on the 21st for several years but have found that we have more attendees on a Saturday event,” said Tony Maples, event coordinator. “So we decided to celebrate on the Saturday around National Skate Board Day and hope everyone can join us.”
Registration begins at 10:00 a.m. and the contest will begin at noon (12:00 p.m.). Entry fee for skaters is $10 and all levels and ages are welcome to participate. The event is free to the public and are encouraged to attend and cheer on the participants. Food and drink will be available at the park.
This year will also feature a cash prize to the top rider in the advanced division.
“We added the cash prize to our contest last year and it really generated some excitement around the event,” said Tony Maples, event coordinator. “I expect it will do more this year. Plainview has a great skate park and many skaters from around the area enjoy skating in Plainview.”
For those not able to attend, volunteers will be live streaming various parts of the event on their Facebook page - www.facebook.com/lubbockskateboarding.
“Being the fourth year to coordinate an event with Tony and his crew has proven that it gets better every year,” said Melinda Brown, CVB Coordinator. “It’s a great opportunity to watch some amazing skateboarders and even if you don’t skateboard, we encourage you to join us.”
The event is sponsored by Lubbock Skateboarding, Tony Maples Photography, City of Plainview, Zumiez, Broadway Company, Willy, Covenant Hospital, Carmel Tones and Proletariat Skateboards.
